Before you start

Before beginning, ensure your slow cooker is clean and positioned on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from any edges. Gather all your ingredients near your prep area. Since this recipe relies on a direct assembly method, having your measuring cup and ingredients ready will make the process seamless.

Check that your gnocchi package is opened and that your spinach is rinsed and patted dry if necessary. No other equipment is required, making this one of the most straightforward and efficient meals you can prepare for a busy household.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 1 lb potato gnocchi
  • 5 oz fresh baby spinach
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup vegetable broth

Instructions

Layering the base

  1. Assemble ingredients
Place the raw potato gnocchi into the bottom of the slow cooker insert. Distribute the fresh baby spinach evenly over the top of the gnocchi layer.
Look for Ensure the gnocchi is spread evenly to avoid clumping.
Tip Use a standard 6-quart slow cooker for best results.

At the end of this phase, the gnocchi should be evenly distributed across the bottom of the slow cooker insert. The spinach should form a loose, airy layer on top of the dumplings. Ensure no large clumps of spinach are buried, as this can prevent even wilting. Visually check that the ingredients are contained within the vessel and that the gnocchi is not piled too high in the center, which helps maintain consistent heat distribution during the cooking cycle.

Adding moisture

  1. Season and liquid
Sprinkle the Italian seasoning uniformly over the spinach. Pour the vegetable broth carefully over all ingredients to ensure everything is moistened.
Look for The liquid should just reach the top of the gnocchi layer.
Tip Do not stir the ingredients at this stage.

Once the Italian seasoning is sprinkled and the vegetable broth is poured, the ingredients should look moistened. The broth should be visible around the edges of the gnocchi. Check that the seasoning is distributed across the entire surface rather than concentrated in one spot. The slow cooker insert should look prepared and ready for the lid. Confirm that the rim of the slow cooker is clean to ensure a tight seal once the lid is placed, which is critical for effective steaming.

Cooking the dish

  1. Slow cook and serve
Cover the slow cooker with the lid. Cook on low for two hours until the gnocchi is tender and the spinach has wilted into the sauce.
Look for The sauce will appear creamy and the gnocchi will be soft.
Tip Check the gnocchi after ninety minutes to ensure it does not overcook.

When the cooking phase is complete, the spinach should be fully wilted and integrated into the sauce. The gnocchi will have expanded slightly and appear translucent or opaque depending on the type used. The liquid should have reduced into a light, creamy coating.

Give the mixture a very gentle fold with a silicone spatula to combine everything before serving. The finished dish should smell fragrant and savory, with the herbs clearly aromatic and the texture uniform throughout the bowl.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is overcooking the gnocchi, which can cause them to disintegrate into a soft, unappealing texture. Avoid exceeding the recommended cook time, as the residual heat in the slow cooker continues the process even after it is turned off.

Another error is stirring the ingredients too early or too often; this disrupts the layering and can lead to uneven cooking. Finally, ensure you do not use too much liquid, as the spinach releases its own water during the cooking process, which could lead to a watery sauce.

How to tell it’s done

The gnocchi is considered done when the dumplings are soft and tender throughout. You can test this by gently pressing one with a fork; it should yield easily without resistance. The sauce should appear thickened and slightly creamy, having incorporated the starch from the gnocchi and the moisture from the spinach.

Because the ingredients are cooked in a closed environment, the internal temperature will safely reach a point where everything is thoroughly heated. Ensure the dish is served hot immediately upon completion for the best texture.
