Tips for success

To enhance the flavor, consider letting the stew rest for a few minutes after turning off the slow cooker; this allows the sauce to settle and the flavors to concentrate slightly before serving.

If you find the sauce is too thick, stir in a tiny amount of water or extra broth. Always use a wooden or silicone spoon to stir to avoid scratching the ceramic coating of the slow cooker insert.

When serving, consider the presentation by using wide, shallow bowls which allow the heat to dissipate slightly while showcasing the creamy texture of the stroganoff.

If you are serving this for a larger group, you can keep the slow cooker on the 'warm' setting for a short period, but be mindful that the sauce may continue to thicken or potentially stick to the bottom if left for too long.

Variations

  • Herb-Infused Turkey Stroganoff: Stir in a tablespoon of fresh thyme or parsley during the last 30 minutes of cooking to add a bright, herbaceous note that elevates the earthy flavors of the mushrooms.
  • Spicy Mushroom Stroganoff: Add a teaspoon of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the soup mixture before cooking if you prefer a subtle heat that cuts through the creamy sauce.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Freezer
Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Reheat
Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat until steaming hot, adding a little broth if the sauce is too thick.

Allow any leftovers to cool to room temperature for no more than 2 hours before transferring them to an airtight container. Properly stored, the stew will remain fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When ready to eat, ensure it is heated thoroughly until steaming hot. Avoid leaving the stew out on the counter for extended periods, as this can compromise food safety.

This dish is an excellent candidate for making ahead, as the flavors often deepen after sitting in the refrigerator overnight. Prepare the stew as directed, allow it to cool completely, and store it in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve, simply reheat it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of broth if necessary to restore the desired creamy consistency.

Serving ideas

Serve this creamy turkey stroganoff hot, ideally over a bed of al dente egg noodles, which are traditional for this type of dish. The wide noodles are perfect for catching the thick, mushroom-laden sauce.

Alternatively, it can be served over fluffy mashed potatoes or even steamed rice, both of which provide a neutral base that complements the savory, creamy nature of the turkey and mushroom stew.

For a complete meal, consider pairing the stroganoff with a side of steamed green beans or a crisp garden salad dressed with a light vinaigrette.

The freshness of the vegetables helps cut through the richness of the creamy sauce, providing a balanced dining experience. Ensure the bowls are warm before serving to help maintain the temperature of the stew for as long as possible while enjoying the meal.

Frequently asked questions

Can this be made with chicken instead of turkey?
Yes, ground chicken is a direct substitute for ground turkey and will work perfectly in this slow cooker recipe, maintaining the same cooking times and flavor profile.
Is it possible to use fresh mushrooms instead of canned?
This recipe uses fresh white mushrooms, which are preferred for their texture and flavor. They hold up well during the slow cooking process and release moisture that helps create the sauce.
Why is it important to stir the stew before serving?
Stirring is essential to combine the creamy sauce with the meat and vegetables, ensuring a consistent texture and flavor in every bite. It also helps to break up any clumps of turkey.
