Tips for success

To achieve the most beautiful presentation, use a sharp, heavy knife to slice the lasagna into clean squares.

Wipe the blade between each cut to ensure the edges of the lasagna remain sharp and the layers stay clearly defined. This small attention to detail makes a significant difference in the final appearance of the dish.

If the cheese is browning too quickly before the center is fully heated, cover the dish loosely with a piece of aluminum foil.

This technique protects the top layer from burning while allowing the heat to penetrate the deeper layers of the lasagna. Always remove the foil during the final minutes of baking to ensure the top crust achieves the perfect golden finish.

Variations

  • Spicy Seafood Lasagna: Add a teaspoon of red pepper flakes to the seafood mixture before layering to provide a subtle, warming heat that cuts through the creaminess of the cheese.
  • Herb-Infused Lasagna: Incorporate fresh basil and chives along with the parsley to add layers of aromatic flavor that brighten the overall profile of the dish.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
Freezer
Freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 1 month.
Reheat
Reheat in a 350°F oven until hot throughout, or microwave in 1-minute intervals until warmed.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container to maintain moisture and prevent the pasta from drying out. Place the container in the coldest part of the refrigerator, away from the door, to ensure the seafood remains at a safe temperature. Consume stored lasagna within two days for the best quality and safety.

This lasagna can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance and kept covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake.

If baking from cold, add an extra 10 to 15 minutes to the initial covered baking time to ensure it is heated through. This makes it an excellent option for hosting, as it allows for effortless preparation.

Serving ideas

Serve the lasagna warm, ideally paired with a crisp side salad featuring a light vinaigrette to balance the richness of the cheese and seafood. A side of toasted garlic bread or steamed green vegetables like asparagus also complements the dish perfectly, providing a complete and satisfying meal for any occasion.

Present the lasagna on warmed plates to help maintain its temperature during the meal. A small dusting of fresh herbs or a crack of black pepper over the top can add a final touch of sophistication.

Ensure that each serving includes a generous portion of the cheesy, seafood-packed center for the best dining experience.

Frequently asked questions

Can this lasagna be made with different types of seafood?
Yes, other firm white fish or scallops can be substituted for the shrimp or crab. Ensure that any added seafood is cooked properly and drained well before assembly to maintain the structure of the lasagna.
Is it possible to use fresh pasta instead of dried?
Fresh pasta can be used and will result in a more tender texture. Follow the package instructions for cooking time, as fresh pasta usually requires much less time to reach the al dente stage compared to dried noodles.
Why does the lasagna release liquid after baking?
This usually happens if the vegetables or seafood were not drained properly before assembly. Always pat the seafood dry after cooking and ensure the pasta is well-drained to minimize excess liquid, which helps maintain the integrity of the layers.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 8 oz lump crab meat, picked over
  • 12 sheets lasagna noodles, boiled
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • fresh parsley, for serving

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside. In a large skillet, sauté the shrimp over medium heat until they turn pink and opaque, ensuring they reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). Remove from heat and gently combine the cooked shrimp and crab meat in a medium bowl.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of sauce if desired, then place a layer of noodles. Top with a portion of the seafood mixture and a generous sprinkling of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a final layer of cheese on top to ensure a golden crust.
  3. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown. Remove from the oven and let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve warm.
