Before you start

Before beginning the cooking process, organize all ingredients and equipment on your counter. Fill a large pot with salted water and bring it to a boil for the pasta. Peel, devein, and chop the raw pink shrimp into bite-sized pieces, then pat them dry with paper towels.

Gently pick through the lump crab meat to check for shells, keeping the lumps as intact as possible. Grate the fresh cheese if not pre-shredded, and finely chop the fresh parsley for the final garnish.

Ingredients at a glance (7)
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 3 cups Alfredo sauce, store-bought or made ahead
  • 1 lb raw pink shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tbsp seafood seasoning
  • 12 oz lump crab meat, picked through
  • 3 cups shredded cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

Preparing the Pasta and Seafood

  1. Boil the Lasagna Noodles
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the lasagna noodles and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the noodles and lay them flat on parchment paper to prevent sticking.
Look for The noodles should be pliable but still have a slight bite.
Tip Lay them in a single layer so they do not tear when you lift them.
  2. Sauté the Seasoned Shrimp
Toss the raw pink shrimp with the seafood seasoning. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and cook the seasoned shrimp for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn opaque and pink, reaching a safe internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). Remove from the heat and set aside.
Look for The shrimp should be firm, pink, and opaque throughout.
Safe temperature 145°F (63°C) internal temperature (shellfish)
Tip Do not overcook the shrimp as they will continue cooking in the oven.

At the end of this initial phase, the pink shrimp should be cooked to a safe internal temperature, appearing opaque and pink.

The boiled lasagna noodles must be drained and laid out flat on parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together before assembly begins. The Alfredo sauce and lump crab meat should be ready and set aside for layering.

Assembling the Lasagna Layers

  1. Assemble the Lasagna Layers
Spread a thin layer of Alfredo sauce in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Lay three cooked lasagna noodles on top. Evenly distribute a portion of the lump crab meat, seasoned pink shrimp, Alfredo sauce, and shredded cheese. Repeat these layers, ending with a final layer of noodles topped with the remaining Alfredo sauce and shredded cheese.
Look for The layers should be even and packed tightly to the edges.
Tip Distribute the seafood evenly so every slice gets a perfect bite.

Once assembly is complete, the baking dish should be neatly filled to the top with alternating layers of pasta, seasoned shrimp, lump crab, Alfredo sauce, and shredded cheese. The final layer of cheese should completely cover the top noodle sheet, creating an even, white blanket that is ready to melt and brown beautifully in the hot oven.

Bake and Rest

  1. Bake the Lasagna
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the golden cheese is bubbling under the heat and the top is lightly browned.
Look for The cheese on top should be melted, golden, and bubbling at the edges.
Tip Spray the underside of the foil with cooking spray to prevent cheese sticking.
  2. Rest and Garnish
Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes to set. Garnish the top with fresh chopped parsley and extra succulent shrimp before slicing into clean squares and serving.
Look for The lasagna should feel firm and hold its shape when sliced.
Tip Wipe your knife blade between cuts for perfectly clean slices.

After baking, the lasagna must display a golden-brown, bubbling cheese crust around the edges. When a knife is inserted into the center, it should encounter no resistance, indicating the pasta is tender throughout. The entire dish must rest for at least fifteen minutes before slicing to allow the creamy layers to firm up and set.

Common mistakes

One common mistake is assembling the lasagna while the noodles are still piping hot. This can cause the cheese to melt prematurely and slip, leading to sliding layers. Allow the noodles to cool slightly before building the dish.

Another error is failing to drain the seafood thoroughly. Any excess water on the shrimp or crab will dilute the cream sauce, resulting in a soggy bake. Always pat the seafood dry before cooking.

How to tell it’s done

The seafood lasagna is fully cooked when the internal temperature of the center reaches 145°F (63°C) on an instant-read thermometer, ensuring the shrimp and crab are safe to consume.

Visually, the Alfredo sauce should be vigorously bubbling at the edges of the dish, and the cheese topping should be melted and speckled with deep golden-brown spots. Letting the baked lasagna rest before slicing is crucial for clean, beautiful portions.

  • Shellfish: 145°F (63°C) in the thickest part
