Before you start

Before beginning, ensure your oven is fully preheated to 375°F (190°C) to allow for an immediate start to the baking process. Prepare the hot dogs by slicing them into uniform coins, which helps them cook at the same rate as the pasta. Have your cheddar sauce and shredded cheese measured and ready to go.

Clear enough space in your kitchen for the assembly process, and ensure your baking dish is clean and dry. Having all components within reach makes the assembly quick and efficient, ensuring the pasta does not sit out too long before entering the oven.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 1 lb dry elbow macaroni
  • 8 oz hot dogs, sliced into coins
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese sauce
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

Assembly Phase

  1. Assemble the base
In a large 9x13 inch baking dish, combine the dry elbow macaroni and the sliced hot dog coins, ensuring they are evenly distributed across the bottom of the dish.
Look for The macaroni and hot dog coins are spread evenly across the base of the baking dish without overlapping too much.
Tip Ensure the hot dog coins are sliced to a uniform thickness so they cook evenly throughout the baking process.

At the end of this phase, the baking dish should be neatly filled with an even layer of dry pasta and hot dog coins. Everything should be arranged in a single, level layer to ensure uniform cooking. Check that no pasta is clumped together in the corners, as this can lead to uneven cooking and dry spots in the finished bake.

Saucing Phase

  1. Add sauce and topping
Pour the cheddar cheese sauce evenly over the pasta and hot dog mixture, then sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the top to create a uniform layer.
Look for The sauce covers the pasta completely and the cheese layer is uniform.
Tip Use a spatula to gently nudge the sauce into the corners of the dish to ensure every piece of pasta is coated.

The dish should now be completely covered in a layer of cheddar sauce, with the shredded cheese evenly distributed over the top.

The sauce should be visible at the edges, and the cheese should completely obscure the pasta underneath. Confirm that the sauce has reached the corners of the dish to provide moisture to all the pasta pieces.

Baking Phase

  1. Bake and serve
Place the dish in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake until the cheese is golden and bubbling. Ensure the internal temperature of the hot dog coins reaches 160°F (71°C) before removing the dish from the oven. Let the dish rest for at least 5 minutes before serving.
Look for The cheese topping is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling vigorously around the edges of the baking dish.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip The resting period allows the sauce to thicken slightly, resulting in a better texture when serving.

The finished dish should have a vibrant, golden-brown cheese crust and the sauce should be bubbling throughout. The hot dogs should be hot and slightly browned on the surface. Check that the pasta is tender and the sauce is perfectly creamy before removing from the oven to let it rest briefly before serving.

Common mistakes

Avoid overfilling the baking dish, as this can lead to the sauce bubbling over the sides and causing a mess in the oven. Ensure the pasta is completely submerged in the sauce before adding the cheese topping; any dry noodles exposed to the air will become hard and crunchy rather than soft and tender.

Do not skip the resting period, as the sauce needs a moment to settle and thicken properly, which improves the overall mouthfeel of the dish significantly.

How to tell it’s done

The dish is perfectly done when the cheese topping has developed a deep golden-brown hue and is bubbling actively around the edges of the baking dish. A kitchen thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 160°F (71°C) to ensure the hot dog coins are properly heated.

The pasta should be tender but still hold its shape, and the sauce should have thickened into a creamy, cohesive consistency that clings to the noodles.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
