Before you start

Before you start, ensure all your ingredients are measured and ready. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) at least 20 minutes before baking to reach the correct temperature.

Have your baking dish cleaned and ready on the counter, and ensure your ham is cubed into uniform, bite-sized pieces for consistent cooking throughout the dish.

If you are using a homemade mustard sauce, have it prepared and at room temperature so it incorporates smoothly with the warm noodles and ham.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 12 oz dry wide egg noodles
  • 2 cups cooked ham cubes
  • 1 1/2 cups creamy mustard-seed sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese

Instructions

Pasta and Ham Assembly

  1. Prepare the Base
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook the egg noodles in a large pot of boiling salted water according to the package directions until al dente. Drain the noodles thoroughly and transfer them to a large ceramic baking dish. Add the cubed cooked ham to the dish and toss gently to combine the noodles and ham evenly across the bottom of the dish.
Look for noodles are tender yet firm
Tip Ensure the noodles are well-drained so the sauce does not become watery during baking.

The noodles and ham should be evenly distributed throughout the baking dish. Everything should look clean and well-integrated. Ensure there are no large clumps of noodles that might prevent the sauce from coating every piece properly before you proceed to the next phase.

Sauce and Cheese Incorporation

  1. Add Sauce and Cheese
Pour the creamy mustard-seed sauce over the noodle and ham mixture, ensuring it coats everything evenly. Use a spoon to gently lift the noodles so the sauce reaches the bottom of the baking dish. Scatter the shredded Swiss cheese evenly over the top of the casserole to create a full layer of cheese.
Look for sauce is evenly distributed
Tip Distribute the cheese right to the edges of the dish for a uniform golden crust.

After pouring the sauce and adding the cheese, the dish should look fully covered. The sauce should have seeped into the bottom of the dish, and the layer of shredded Swiss should be complete and uniform, leaving no gaps where the noodles might dry out during the baking process.

Baking to Golden Perfection

  1. Bake and Serve
Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling in patches. Remove from the oven and let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set slightly. Serve warm directly from the baking dish.
Look for cheese is golden and sauce is bubbling
Tip Avoid over-baking to keep the sauce creamy and the noodles from becoming too soft.

The dish is ready when the cheese is bubbling and has developed a light golden-brown color. The edges should show active, bubbling sauce. If the cheese is melting but not browning, you may need a few extra minutes, but watch closely to ensure it does not burn.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is overcooking the noodles before they enter the oven; ensure they are strictly al dente because they will continue to soften as they bake in the sauce. Another error is using too much liquid in the sauce, which can result in a soupy casserole rather than a creamy one.

Finally, avoid crowding the dish too much, as this prevents the heat from circulating properly and can lead to uneven cooking, where the edges are hot but the center remains lukewarm.

How to tell it’s done

The noodle bake is done when the sauce is bubbling visibly around the edges of the dish and the Swiss cheese has melted into a golden, slightly browned crust. The center should be hot to the touch, and the noodles should be heated through.

Use a serving spoon to lift a portion; the sauce should be thick and creamy, not watery, and the cheese should exhibit a slight, natural stretch. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes after removing it from the oven.
