Before you start

Before starting, measure all the ingredients and have them ready. Halve the baby potatoes (no need to peel). If using turkey breast cutlets that are thicker than 1 inch, pound them gently to an even thickness for more uniform cooking.

Have the soup, cheese, and butter measured and at hand. The slow cooker should be clean and ready. There is no need to preheat or grease the insert, though a light coat of nonstick spray can make cleanup easier.

Ingredients at a glance (6)
  • 1 1/2 lb boneless turkey breast cutlets
  • 1 1/2 lb baby Yukon Gold potatoes, halved
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed golden mushroom soup
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups cooked jasmine rice, for serving

Instructions

Layer the raw ingredients

  1. Layer the raw ingredients
Place the turkey breast cutlets in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer. Scatter the halved baby potatoes around and over the turkey. Pour the condensed golden mushroom soup over the top, spreading it evenly with a spatula if needed. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the soup, then dot with the butter pieces.
Look for The turkey and potatoes are mostly covered by the soup and cheese.
Tip No need to stir—the layers will meld as they cook.

At the end of this phase, the slow cooker contains a neat layer of turkey at the bottom, potatoes scattered around, and a creamy blanket of soup, cheese, and butter on top.

The ingredients are raw and not yet combined, but the visual is inviting—golden soup, bright cheddar, and pale butter dots. The slow cooker is covered and ready to turn on.

Slow cook until tender

  1. Slow cook until tender
Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the turkey is cooked through and the potatoes are fork-tender. The turkey is safe to eat when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
Look for The sauce is bubbling gently and the turkey shreds easily.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Avoid lifting the lid during cooking to keep the heat steady.

After 4 to 5 hours on low, the kitchen smells rich and savory. The sauce is bubbling gently at the edges, the cheese has melted into a golden cream, and the turkey is visibly tender. The potatoes are soft when pierced with a fork. The turkey should register at least 165°F (74°C) before proceeding.

Shred and serve

  1. Shred and serve
Turn off the slow cooker. Use two forks to shred the turkey breast directly in the sauce, stirring gently to combine with the potatoes and cheese sauce. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Serve hot over steamed jasmine rice, spooning extra sauce over each portion.
Look for The turkey shreds easily and the sauce is thick and creamy.
Tip For a thicker sauce, let it sit uncovered for 5 minutes before serving.

Once shredded, the turkey is moist and coated in the creamy cheddar sauce, with potatoes peeking through. The sauce is thick enough to cling to a spoon. When served over rice, it's a hearty, comforting plate with steam rising and a glossy sheen. The flavors are balanced—savory, cheesy, and satisfying.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is lifting the lid too often, which lets heat escape and extends cooking time. Another is overcooking the potatoes, which can make them mushy; check them at the lower end of the suggested time.

Using a slow cooker that's too large can cause the liquid to evaporate too quickly, leaving a dry dish—stick to a 6-quart size. Finally, resist the urge to stir the ingredients before cooking; the layering is what creates the perfect texture.

How to tell it’s done

The dish is done when the turkey breast registers 165°F (74°C) on an instant-read thermometer and the potatoes are fork-tender—a knife should slide through them with no resistance.

The sauce will be bubbly and slightly thickened, and the cheese will be fully melted and incorporated. If the turkey is not yet shreddable, continue cooking in 30-minute increments until it is.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
