Tips for success
To enhance the garlic flavor, you can add two cloves of freshly minced garlic when layering the ingredients at the start. This adds a punch of freshness that contrasts beautifully with the roasted garlic notes in the store-bought sauce. If you prefer a bit of heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes can be stirred in during the final shredding phase, providing a subtle warmth that cuts through the richness of the cream cheese and mozzarella blend.
For those who enjoy a crunch, consider toasting your breadcrumbs in a small pan with a teaspoon of butter and a pinch of dried herbs until golden brown. This small step adds a wonderful textural contrast to the creamy chicken and pasta.
Additionally, if the sauce seems too thick after shredding, a small amount of warm chicken stock or pasta water can be stirred in to achieve your preferred consistency, making the sauce cling perfectly to the rotini pasta without becoming overly heavy.
Variations
- Spicy Garlic Parmesan: Stir in two tablespoons of chopped pickled jalapeños or a teaspoon of hot chili oil during the final shredding phase for a spicy kick that complements the rich cream cheese base.
- Spinach and Artichoke Twist: Add a cup of chopped fresh spinach and a half cup of drained, chopped artichoke hearts during the final 30 minutes of cooking for a vibrant, veggie-packed version of this classic dish.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Allow to cool for no more than 2 hours before refrigerating.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, or on the stovetop over low heat until warmed through.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Ensure the chicken has cooled to room temperature for no more than 2 hours before placing it in the fridge to prevent bacterial growth. When storing, keep the chicken and the pasta separate if possible, as the pasta will absorb the sauce and become soft over time. If stored together, the texture will change, but it remains safe to eat.
This recipe is excellent for make-ahead planning. You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before and store it in the refrigerator.
When ready to cook, simply place the insert into the slow cooker base and add 30 minutes to the cooking time to account for the cold ingredients. This makes it a perfect option for busy mornings where you can start the process before heading out the door, ensuring a hot dinner is ready upon your return.
Serving ideas
Serve this creamy garlic parmesan chicken over a generous bed of al dente rotini pasta. The ridges of the rotini are perfect for capturing the thick, savory sauce, ensuring every bite is flavorful.
Ladle the chicken mixture over the pasta, making sure to scrape all the creamy sauce from the sides of the slow cooker to include in each serving. Top each bowl with the toasted breadcrumbs and fresh parsley for a professional, restaurant-style finish that impresses.
For a lighter serving option, pair the chicken with steamed broccoli or roasted asparagus instead of pasta. The vegetables provide a crisp, earthy contrast to the rich, creamy sauce. You can also serve this chicken inside a toasted hoagie roll for a delicious, hearty sandwich.
Regardless of the side, ensure the dish is served hot. The combination of the creamy sauce and tender chicken is best enjoyed immediately after it has been finished and the cheese has fully melted into the mixture.
