Tips for success

For a deeper flavor profile, consider adding a pinch of smoked paprika or freshly cracked black pepper before serving. If you find the sauce is too thick after cooking, you can stir in a tablespoon of milk or heavy cream to loosen it up to your desired consistency.

Be cautious when stirring to avoid breaking the potatoes; use a large, flat silicone spatula to gently fold the ingredients together from the bottom to the top.

If you want an extra layer of texture, you can sprinkle a little extra shredded cheddar over the top during the last ten minutes of cooking, allowing it to melt into a gooey layer. However, keep in mind that this will not brown like it would in an oven. The key to this dish is the balance between the tang of the ranch, the richness of the cheese, and the saltiness of the bacon, so taste before adding any additional salt.

Variations

  • Spicy Ranch Potatoes: Add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce to the mixture before cooking to introduce a spicy kick that complements the creamy cheese.
  • Loaded Baked Potato Style: Stir in a half cup of sour cream and a quarter cup of chopped fresh chives after cooking to enhance the flavor profile and mimic the taste of a classic loaded baked potato.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheat
Reheat in a microwave-safe dish in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until heated through.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container to maintain moisture and prevent the potatoes from absorbing other odors from the refrigerator. Because the dish contains dairy, it is important to cool it down quickly after serving and place it in the refrigerator within two hours.

Properly stored, it will maintain its quality for up to three days. When ready to eat, ensure it is heated thoroughly until the center is piping hot to ensure food safety.

While this dish is best served fresh, you can prepare the ingredients ahead of time by washing and cutting the potatoes and storing them in a bowl of cold water in the refrigerator to prevent browning.

Drain and dry them well before adding them to the slow cooker. The bacon can also be cooked and chopped in advance and kept in the refrigerator, allowing you to simply assemble and start the slow cooker when you are ready to begin.

Serving ideas

Serve this dish as a hearty side accompaniment to roasted meats, grilled chicken, or even as the centerpiece of a casual meal. The creamy nature of the potatoes pairs exceptionally well with simpler main courses. For a balanced presentation, consider serving with a crisp side salad or steamed green vegetables to contrast the richness of the creamy ranch sauce, providing a refreshing element to the overall meal.

For larger gatherings, this dish is easily kept warm in the slow cooker on the 'warm' setting for a short period. If the sauce begins to thicken too much while sitting, a small splash of warm milk or water stirred in gently will restore its creamy texture.

Ensure you provide a large spoon or serving utensil to help guests scoop up the sauce along with the potatoes, as that is where much of the flavor is concentrated.

Frequently asked questions

Can other types of potatoes be used for this recipe?
Yes, Yukon gold potatoes are an excellent alternative to red potatoes. They have a naturally buttery flavor and a creamy texture that works perfectly with the ranch and cheese sauce. Avoid starchy potatoes like Russets, as they tend to break down too easily during the long cooking time.
Why does the sauce seem oily after cooking?
The sauce may appear oily if the cheese was not fully incorporated or if a lower-quality cheese was used. Ensure you are using a good quality, freshly shredded cheddar, as pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can affect how it melts. Stirring the mixture well at the end of the cooking process usually helps to re-emulsify the sauce.
Is it necessary to peel the potatoes?
Peeling the potatoes is entirely optional. Red potatoes have thin, delicate skins that become tender during the slow-cooking process, so they are perfectly fine to leave on. Leaving the skins on also provides a nice rustic look and adds a bit of extra texture to the finished dish.
