Tips for success
For the best flavor, use a good-quality sharp cheddar cheese and shred it yourself from a block. Pre-shredded cheeses often contain cellulose or other anti-caking agents that prevent them from melting smoothly, resulting in a grainy sauce. If you prefer a milder taste, use mild cheddar or a combination of cheddar and Monterey Jack. You can also add a pinch of garlic powder or dried thyme to the layer of onions for extra depth.
This recipe is incredibly forgiving, so feel free to adjust the quantities to suit your family’s size. If you have a larger slow cooker, you can easily double the ingredients—just make sure the turkey is in a single layer and the cooker is not overfilled.
The cook time may need to be slightly extended if you add more meat. For a thicker sauce, you can stir in a slurry of cornstarch and water during the last 30 minutes of cooking, but the sauce is usually thick enough on its own.
Variations
- Chicken Version: Swap the turkey breast for boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs. The cook time may be slightly shorter for chicken, so check for doneness at the lower end of the time range.
- Add Mushrooms: Sauté sliced mushrooms and add them to the slow cooker along with the onions for an earthy, savory boost. This adds extra texture and flavor without changing the overall character.
- Spicy Kick: Add a few dashes of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the soup before pouring it over the turkey. This gives the dish a gentle heat that contrasts nicely with the sweet onions and cheese.
- Herb Infusion: Sprinkle dried thyme, rosemary, or sage over the onions before adding the soup. These herbs complement the turkey and add a layer of aromatic complexity to the sauce.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave, adding a splash of broth if needed.
- Freezer
- Freeze cooled leftovers in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot. Add a little chicken broth or water if the sauce is too thick.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The turkey will remain moist and flavorful. To reheat, place the desired amount in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. You can also microwave individual portions on high for 2-3 minutes, stirring halfway. If the sauce has thickened too much, add a splash of chicken broth or water to loosen it.
This dish is perfect for meal prep. You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed, adding about 30 minutes to the cooking time to account for the chilled ingredients.
Alternatively, you can cook the turkey and sauce ahead of time, then store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave when ready to serve.
Serving ideas
This creamy turkey dish is delicious served over fluffy jasmine rice, which soaks up the savory sauce beautifully. Mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or crusty bread are also excellent choices.
For a lighter option, serve it over cauliflower rice or alongside steamed green beans or a crisp green salad. The rich, cheesy sauce pairs well with bright, tangy sides like pickles or a simple vinaigrette-dressed salad to cut through the richness.
For a complete meal, consider adding a side of roasted vegetables, such as carrots, Brussels sprouts, or asparagus. The sweetness of the onions and the sharpness of the cheddar also complement roasted root vegetables nicely.
If you have leftover turkey, use it to make sandwiches, tacos, or a hearty soup. The sauce can be used as a gravy for mashed potatoes or as a topping for baked potatoes. This recipe is versatile and can be repurposed in many ways.

Ingredients
- 2 lb boneless, skinless turkey breast cutlets
- 2 medium Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- cooked jasmine rice, for serving
Instructions
- Place the turkey breast cutlets in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer. Scatter the sliced onions evenly over the turkey. Pour the condensed French onion soup over the top, making sure to cover the onions and turkey as much as possible.
- Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the soup mixture. Dot with the butter pieces. Do not stir; the layers will meld during cooking.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the turkey is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
- Using two forks, shred the turkey breast directly in the slow cooker. Stir the shredded turkey into the creamy sauce and onions until well combined.
- Spoon the hot turkey mixture over cooked jasmine rice. Serve immediately, with extra sauce spooned over the top.
