Tips for success
For the best flavor, use a good-quality condensed French onion soup. The soup is the backbone of the sauce, so a rich, savory brand makes a difference.
If you have time, you can also use homemade French onion soup concentrate, but the canned version works perfectly and keeps the recipe quick.
To make this dish even more indulgent, add a splash of dry sherry or white wine along with the soup—it’s optional but adds depth.
For a crunchy topping, serve with croutons or a sprinkle of fresh thyme. The leftovers are fantastic in sandwiches or over baked potatoes the next day.
Variations
- Creamy Mushroom Version: Add 8 oz sliced cremini mushrooms along with the onions. Sauté them in a skillet with a little butter before adding to the slow cooker for extra depth.
- Spicy Kick: Add 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes or a minced jalapeño with the onions. Serve with a drizzle of hot sauce for an extra layer of heat.
- Herb-Infused: Stir in 1 teaspoon dried thyme and 1 teaspoon dried rosemary with the soup. Fresh herbs can be added at the end for a brighter flavor.
- Bacon-Topped: Cook 4 slices of bacon until crisp, crumble, and sprinkle over the finished dish. The smoky flavor pairs beautifully with the sweet onions and cheddar.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave, adding a splash of broth if needed.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot. For individual portions, microwave on high for 2–3 minutes, stirring halfway.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools; when reheating, add a splash of chicken broth or water to loosen it if needed. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until piping hot.
You can assemble the raw ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate.
In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook as directed. You may need to add 30 minutes to the cooking time because the ingredients start cold.
Serving ideas
Serve this creamy chicken over fluffy jasmine rice, which soaks up the rich sauce beautifully.
Egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread are also excellent choices for soaking up every drop. A simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette adds brightness and cuts through the richness.
For a complete meal, add a side of steamed green beans or roasted asparagus. The dish is satisfying on its own, but a little acidity from a side salad or pickled vegetables balances the creamy sauce. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley for a pop of color, if desired.

Creamy Cheddar French Onion Chicken: Easy Crockpot Dinner

Ingredients
- 3 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 2 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia), thinly sliced
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 2 cups cooked jasmine rice, for serving
Instructions
- Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer, overlapping slightly if needed. Scatter the sliced onions evenly over the chicken. Pour the condensed French onion soup over the top, making sure to cover the onions and chicken as much as possible.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the soup and onions. Dot with the butter pieces. Do not stir—the layers will meld during cooking.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the chicken is cooked through and tender enough to shred easily with a fork. The sauce will be bubbly and the onions soft and caramelized.
- Once the chicken is fully cooked, use two forks to shred it directly in the slow cooker. Stir the shredded chicken into the sauce so it absorbs the onion and cheese flavors. If the sauce seems thin, leave the lid off for 10–15 minutes on the warm setting to thicken slightly.
- Spoon the creamy cheddar French onion chicken over warm cooked jasmine rice. Serve immediately, spooning extra sauce from the slow cooker over the top.
