Tips for success
For the crispiest bread, toast the cut sides in the oven for a few minutes before adding the sauce. This creates a barrier that prevents the bread from becoming soggy.
If you prefer extra cheese, add a handful of grated Parmesan on top before baking for a salty, nutty flavor. You can also sprinkle some red pepper flakes for heat. Use a serrated knife to slice the bread cleanly without squashing the toppings.
To make ahead, prepare the butter chicken sauce and marinated chicken a day in advance. Store them separately in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, assemble the dish and bake. If you have leftovers, reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes to restore crispness. Avoid microwaving, as it will make the bread chewy. This dish is best enjoyed fresh, but it can be stored and reheated within two days.
Variations
- Spicy Jalapeño Version: Add sliced jalapeños on top of the mozzarella before baking for a spicy kick. You can also mix a teaspoon of chili flakes into the garlic butter. This adds heat and a fresh, bright flavor that pairs well with the creamy sauce.
- Vegetarian Option: Replace the chicken with paneer or extra firm tofu, cubed and pan-seared. Marinate the paneer in the same spice mixture for 15 minutes. The rest of the recipe remains the same. This version is hearty and satisfying, perfect for meatless Monday.
- Crispy Bacon Addition: Crumble cooked bacon over the top before baking for a smoky, salty crunch. The bacon adds a savory depth that complements the butter chicken. Use about 4 slices, cooked and crumbled. This variation is indulgent and best for special occasions.
- Cheesy Overload: Mix 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack with the mozzarella for a more pronounced cheese flavor. You can also add a sprinkle of Parmesan on top. This makes the dish extra gooey and rich, perfect for cheese lovers.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 8-10 minutes to restore crispness.
- Freezer
- Freeze the assembled but unbaked dish for up to 2 months. Bake from frozen, adding 10-15 minutes to the cooking time.
- Reheat
- Reheat slices in a 350°F oven for 8-10 minutes until hot and cheese is bubbly. Avoid microwave to keep bread crisp.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place slices on a baking sheet and warm in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 8-10 minutes, or until heated through and the cheese is bubbly.
The bread may lose some crispness upon storage, but reheating in the oven will help restore it. Avoid using the microwave, as it will make the bread soggy. For best results, consume within 2 days.
The chicken marinade can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance. The butter chicken sauce can also be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator. When ready to assemble, reheat the sauce gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
The bread can be split and buttered a few hours ahead, but wait to add the sauce and cheese until just before baking to prevent sogginess. This makes the dish perfect for entertaining.
Serving ideas
Serve the butter chicken garlic bread as a main course with a fresh green salad or roasted vegetables to balance the richness. It also works well as a hearty appetizer—cut into smaller squares and serve with toothpicks.
For a complete Indian-inspired meal, pair it with a cooling raita or cucumber salad. The dish is quite filling, so plan for about one slice per person as a main, or more if serving as a snack.
Garnish with extra chopped parsley or cilantro and a drizzle of cream or yogurt before serving for a fresh touch. If you like heat, offer sliced jalapeños or a sprinkle of chili flakes on the side. The bread is best enjoyed hot, straight from the oven, when the cheese is gooey and the crust is crisp. For a fun twist, serve it with a side of warm butter chicken sauce for dipping.

Creamy Butter Chicken Garlic Bread: Crispy, Cheesy, Irresistible

Ingredients
- 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cubed
- 2 tbsp Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 cup diced onion
- 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 loaf artisan bread loaf
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- In a glass bowl, combine the cubed chicken with Greek yogurt, lemon juice, oil, ground coriander, red chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, ground turmeric, and garam masala. Stir until every piece is coated. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken and sear for 7 minutes, turning occasionally, until charred and cooked through. The chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Transfer to a plate and set aside.
- In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium. Add the diced onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until soft and translucent. Stir in the ginger garlic paste and tomato paste, and cook for 1 minute until fragrant and the tomato paste darkens slightly.
- Pour in the heavy cream and stir continuously. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and turns glossy. Season with salt to taste. Return the seared chicken to the pan, coating it with the sauce. Keep warm.
- In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, minced garlic, and chopped parsley until well combined. Set aside.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the artisan bread loaf in half lengthwise. Place the halves cut-side up on a baking sheet. Brush the cut surfaces generously with the garlic butter, making sure to cover the entire surface.
- Ladle the creamy butter chicken sauce over the bread, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella over the sauce. Arrange the seared chicken pieces on top, then drizzle with more sauce. Finish with the remaining mozzarella.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 12 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges of the bread are golden and crisp. If you like a deeper brown top, switch to broil for the last 1–2 minutes, watching closely.
- Use a sharp knife to slice the bread into portions. Lift each slice with a spatula, ensuring a good cheese pull. Serve hot, with extra sauce on the side if desired.
