Before you start

Before beginning, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for the most even cooking. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) well in advance.

Have your 9x13 inch baking dish ready on a stable surface and ensure you have a sharp knife and a sturdy spatula for serving. If using fresh herbs for garnish, wash and chop them now so they are ready for the final presentation.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 jars (15 oz each) Alfredo sauce
  • 1 box lasagna noodles, oven-ready
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

Browning the beef

  1. Prepare the beef
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula, until it is completely browned and no longer pink. Ensure the beef reaches an internal temperature of at least 160°F (71°C) to ensure it is cooked through safely. Drain any excess fat if desired before moving to the assembly phase.
Look for The beef is fully browned and crumbly.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip Drain excess grease thoroughly to keep the final lasagna from becoming too oily.

The ground beef should be deeply browned and broken into uniform, small crumbles. The skillet should be hot, and the fat rendered from the meat should be mostly clear. Check that all pieces of meat are fully cooked through with no traces of pink, ensuring a safe and flavorful base for the layers to follow.

Building the layers

  1. Layer the lasagna
Spread a thin layer of Alfredo sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking pan. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce. Add a portion of the cooked ground beef, followed by a generous sprinkle of mozzarella cheese and more Alfredo sauce. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a final topping of mozzarella cheese.
Look for The pan is filled with alternating layers.
Tip Ensure the edges of the noodles are covered with sauce to prevent them from drying out during baking.

The pan should show distinct, even layers of sauce, noodles, beef, and cheese. Ensure the sauce reaches the edges of the pan to keep the noodles moist.

The final layer of cheese should be spread evenly across the top to ensure a consistent, golden crust during the baking process, signaling that assembly is complete.

Baking until golden

  1. Bake and serve
Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving to ensure the layers set properly.
Look for The cheese is melted and bubbling.
Tip Resting is essential for clean slices.

The lasagna is ready when the top is bubbly and the cheese has achieved a golden-brown finish. The aroma should be savory and comforting. Check that the center is hot by inserting a knife; it should slide through the layers easily, confirming that the noodles have absorbed the sauce and the lasagna is fully set.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is using too little sauce, which can result in dry, crunchy noodles. Ensure there is enough Alfredo sauce to fully coat each layer.

Another pitfall is slicing the lasagna immediately after it comes out of the oven. This will cause the layers to collapse and the sauce to run. Always allow the dish to rest for at least 10 minutes to let the structure stabilize.

How to tell it’s done

The lasagna is done when the edges are bubbling vigorously and the cheese on top has developed a beautiful, slightly golden-brown crust. A knife inserted into the center should meet little resistance, indicating the noodles are tender throughout.

Ensure the internal temperature of the center reaches at least 160°F (71°C) to confirm the beef is fully cooked and the dish is heated through uniformly.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
