Tips for success
For the best flavor, let the dip sit in the slow cooker for at least 15 minutes after it finishes cooking. This allows the flavors to meld further and the texture to become even creamier.
If you’re serving it over a long party, keep the Crockpot on the warm setting and stir occasionally to prevent a skin from forming.
Toasting the baguette slices adds a crunchy contrast to the creamy dip. Brush them lightly with olive oil and toast in a 400°F (200°C) oven for 5–7 minutes, or until golden.
You can also serve with crackers, celery sticks, or tortilla chips. The dip is best enjoyed warm, straight from the slow cooker.
Variations
- Spicy Crab Dip: Add 1–2 teaspoons of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the base for a spicy kick. The heat pairs well with the sweet crab and sharp cheddar.
- Bacon Crab Dip: Fold in 1/2 cup of cooked, crumbled bacon along with the crab. The smoky flavor adds depth and richness to the dip.
- Jalapeño Popper Crab Dip: Stir in 2–3 finely diced jalapeños (seeded for less heat) and 1/4 cup of chopped pickled jalapeños for a tangy, spicy twist.
- Artichoke Crab Dip: Fold in 1 cup of drained, chopped artichoke hearts with the crab. The artichokes add a mild, earthy flavor and extra texture.

Do not leave the dip at room temperature for more than 2 hours. The dip can also be frozen for up to 2 months, though the texture may change slightly.
This dip can be assembled up to a day ahead. Combine all ingredients in the Crockpot insert, cover, and refrigerate. When ready to cook, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on low for 2 hours, adding 15–20 minutes if starting from cold. The dip can also be cooked fully and reheated on low.
Serving ideas
Serve this crab dip straight from the Crockpot to keep it warm throughout your gathering.
The bubbling cheese and sweet crab are best enjoyed with crusty baguette slices, but it also pairs well with buttery crackers, toasted pita chips, or fresh vegetables. For a Chesapeake-themed spread, add steamed shrimp and lemon wedges.
This dip is rich, so a little goes a long way. Plan for about 1/4 cup per person as an appetizer. It’s perfect for game days, holiday parties, or any casual get-together. The slow cooker keeps it warm for hours, making it a fuss-free option for hosts.

Easy Crockpot Maryland Crab Dip with Sharp Cheddar

Ingredients
- 1 lb jumbo lump blue crab meat, picked over for shells
- 16 oz cream cheese, softened and cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 cups shredded sharp white and yellow cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp Old Bay seasoning
- 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning, for dusting
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
- Toasted baguette slices, for serving
Instructions
- In the Crockpot insert, add the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and Old Bay seasoning. Stir with a mixing spoon until the cream cheese is mostly smooth and the seasonings are evenly distributed. The mixture will be thick and slightly lumpy.
- Gently fold the jumbo lump crab meat and shredded cheddar cheese into the cream cheese mixture. Use a spatula to fold rather than stir vigorously, so the crab lumps stay intact. Make sure the crab is evenly distributed throughout the dip.
- Spread the mixture into an even layer in the Crockpot. Smooth the top with the back of the spoon so it cooks evenly. The surface should be level, with the cheddar and crab distributed throughout.
- Cover the Crockpot and set it to LOW. Cook for 2 hours, without lifting the lid, until the dip is bubbling around the edges and the cheese is fully melted. The dip should be hot throughout and slightly golden at the edges.
- After 2 hours, check the internal temperature of the dip with an instant-read thermometer. It should read at least 145°F (63°C) to ensure the crab is fully heated. If it hasn't reached that temperature, cover and cook for another 15 minutes.
- Once the dip is hot and bubbly, sprinkle the extra Old Bay seasoning and chopped parsley over the top. This adds a fresh, aromatic finish and a final punch of Chesapeake flavor.
- Serve the dip directly from the Crockpot to keep it warm. Accompany with toasted baguette slices for scooping. The dip should be creamy, with melted cheddar pulling from the spoon and sweet crab in every bite.
