Before you start

Before beginning, ensure that all ingredients are measured and ready. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the correct temperature before the casserole is inserted. Ensure the workspace is clean and that the baking dish is placed on a stable surface.

Keep the ground turkey refrigerated until the very last moment before assembly, and rinse the workspace after handling the raw meat to maintain hygiene. Having all components within reach will make the assembly process efficient and straightforward.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 1 lb dry elbow macaroni
  • 1 lb raw ground turkey
  • 2 cups tomato sauce with sliced mushrooms
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

Initial Assembly

  1. Assemble the Casserole Base
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large 9x13 inch ceramic baking dish, combine the dry elbow macaroni and the raw ground turkey crumbles. Ensure the meat is evenly distributed among the pasta to create a consistent texture throughout the dish.
Look for The turkey and macaroni are evenly spread across the bottom of the baking dish.
Tip Distribute the turkey crumbles thoroughly to ensure they cook evenly and provide flavor in every bite.

The macaroni and turkey are layered evenly across the bottom of the dish. The turkey is broken into small, consistent pieces to ensure even cooking and thorough flavor distribution.

Ensure the baking dish is clean and placed on a flat, stable surface before moving to the next step of adding the sauce and cheese.

Sauce and Cheese Application

  1. Add Sauce and Cheese
Pour the tomato sauce with sliced mushrooms over the macaroni and turkey mixture in the baking dish. Spread the sauce gently with a spoon to ensure all pasta is covered, which helps the pasta hydrate and cook properly. Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar cheese evenly over the top layer.
Look for The pasta is completely submerged in the sauce and the cheese forms an even layer on top.
Tip Ensure the edges are well-sauced to prevent the pasta from drying out during the baking process.

The sauce with mushrooms is poured over the pasta, ensuring complete coverage to facilitate proper cooking. The cheese is spread in a uniform layer. At this stage, the dish should look fully assembled, with the sauce just reaching the top of the pasta, preparing it for the transition into the oven for baking.

Baking and Completion

  1. Bake and Serve
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Ensure the ground turkey reaches an internal temperature of at least 165°F (74°C). Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Look for The edges are bubbling and the cheese is melted and golden brown.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip A quick rest allows the sauce to thicken and makes serving much easier.

The casserole is removed from the oven when the top is golden and bubbling. The aroma of roasted tomato and melted cheese should be apparent. Check the internal temperature of the turkey with a thermometer. The dish must be allowed to rest for 10 minutes to allow the sauce to set before serving.

Common mistakes

Avoid overcrowding the baking dish, as this can lead to uneven cooking and may cause the sauce to boil over. Do not skip the resting period, as this allows the sauce to thicken and distribute evenly, preventing a watery consistency when served.

Ensure the ground turkey is broken into small, uniform crumbles; large chunks may take longer to cook and create uneven textures. Finally, do not use a sauce that is too thick, as the pasta needs sufficient liquid to soften properly during the baking process.

How to tell it’s done

The casserole is done when the pasta is tender and the sauce is bubbling throughout. The cheese on top should be melted and lightly browned. Most importantly, use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of the ground turkey, which must reach at least 165°F (74°C) in the center of the dish.

If the top browns too quickly, tent it loosely with aluminum foil for the remainder of the cooking time to ensure the center finishes cooking properly.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
