Tips for success
For the best flavor, choose a barbecue sauce that has a good balance of sweet and smoky. If you like a little heat, add a pinch of cayenne or a few dashes of hot sauce to the slow cooker.
The cherries are a key component—they break down during cooking and meld into the sauce, so don't skip them. If you're using frozen cherries, there's no need to thaw them first; just add them straight from the freezer.
To make the sauce even more luxurious, you can thicken it after the ribs are cooked. Remove the ribs to a serving platter, then whisk a tablespoon of cornstarch with a little cold water and stir it into the sauce.
Cook on HIGH for 10 minutes until it thickens. For a smoother sauce, you can also puree the cherries with an immersion blender before serving, but leaving them whole adds a nice texture.
Variations
- Spicy Cherry Cola Ribs: Add 1–2 minced chipotle peppers in adobo sauce along with the barbecue sauce. The smoky heat balances the sweet cherries and cola, giving the ribs a spicy kick that builds with each bite.
- Root Beer BBQ Ribs: Swap the cola for root beer for a deeper, more herbal sweetness. Root beer has notes of sassafras and vanilla, which pair beautifully with the maple bourbon sauce and cherries.
- Bourbon Cherry Glaze: For a more pronounced bourbon flavor, stir 2 tablespoons of bourbon into the sauce during the last 30 minutes of cooking. The alcohol mostly cooks off, leaving a warm, boozy undertone.
- Pineapple Cherry Ribs: Add 1 cup of pineapple chunks (drained) along with the cherries. The pineapple adds tropical sweetness and a bit of acidity, making the sauce even more vibrant. Reduce the cola to 1/2 cup to keep the sauce thick.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftover ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools; add a splash of water when reheating.
- Freezer
- Freeze the ribs in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat gently in a saucepan over medium-low heat, or in the microwave in 30-second bursts until hot.
Store leftover ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools, so you may want to add a tablespoon of water when reheating to loosen it. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until piping hot. The ribs also freeze well for up to 3 months.
This recipe is perfect for meal prep. You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed.
If you're making it ahead for a party, cook the ribs a day in advance, let them cool, and refrigerate. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the slow cooker on LOW until warmed through.
Serving ideas
Serve the ribs straight from the slow cooker for a casual, family-style dinner. They're fantastic with mashed potatoes, coleslaw, or cornbread to soak up the extra sauce. For a low-carb option, serve with roasted vegetables or a green salad. The sweet-tangy glaze also pairs well with creamy mac and cheese.
For a more polished presentation, transfer the ribs to a platter and spoon the sauce over the top. Garnish with a few fresh cherries or a sprinkle of chopped parsley, if desired.
This dish is hearty enough to be the main event, but it also works as a filling for sandwiches—just pile the shredded pork onto buns and add a little extra sauce.

Cherry Cola Maple Bourbon Country Pork Ribs: Slow-Cooker Dinner

Ingredients
- 3 lb boneless country-style pork ribs
- 1 1/2 cups pitted dark sweet cherries
- 1 cup cola
- 1 1/2 cups maple bourbon barbecue sauce
Instructions
- Place the boneless country-style pork ribs in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer, overlapping slightly if needed. Scatter the pitted dark sweet cherries evenly over the ribs. Pour the cola along the side of the slow cooker, avoiding pouring directly over the meat to keep the cherries in place.
- Pour the maple bourbon barbecue sauce generously over the ribs and cherries. Use a spoon or spatula to spread the sauce evenly, making sure the top of the ribs are well coated. Do not stir; let the layers remain as they are.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the ribs are fork-tender and the meat pulls apart easily. The internal temperature of the pork should reach 145°F (63°C) for safety, but for fall-apart tenderness cook until the meat shreds with a fork. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the ribs rest in the sauce for at least 3 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, making the meat even more tender.
- Using a carving fork or tongs, carefully lift the ribs from the slow cooker, letting any excess sauce drip back. Place the ribs on a serving platter or individual plates. Spoon some of the reduced cherry-cola sauce over the top.
