Tips for success
For the best flavor, use a high-quality honey hickory barbecue sauce that you love — it's the backbone of the dish. If you want a thicker glaze, after the ribs are done, remove them to a plate and transfer the sauce to a saucepan.
Simmer over medium-high heat for 5-10 minutes until it reduces and thickens, then spoon over the ribs. This extra step elevates the dish to company-worthy status.
Don't be afraid to double the recipe for a crowd — just make sure your slow cooker is large enough (at least 6 quarts). If you have leftovers, the ribs taste even better the next day as the flavors meld.
Shred the leftover meat and use it in sandwiches, tacos, or over rice. The sauce freezes well, so you can save it for another meal.
Variations
- Spicy Cherry Cola Ribs: Add 1-2 minced chipotle peppers in adobo sauce or 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes along with the barbecue sauce. The heat balances the sweetness of the cherries and cola for a spicy-sweet kick.
- Bourbon Cherry Cola Ribs: Replace 1/4 cup of the cola with bourbon. The bourbon adds a warm, vanilla-like depth that complements the cherries and hickory smoke. Cook as directed; alcohol mostly cooks off.
- Smoky Maple Variation: Swap the honey hickory barbecue sauce for a smoky maple barbecue sauce, and use maple-flavored cola if available. This version leans sweeter and richer, perfect for fall gatherings.
- Cherry Cola Pulled Pork: Instead of ribs, use a 3-4 lb pork shoulder. Cook on LOW for 8-10 hours until it shreds easily. Remove the pork, shred, and toss with the reduced sauce for pulled pork sandwiches.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftover ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Freezer
- Freeze cooled ribs and sauce in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through. Or microwave in 30-second bursts.
Store leftover ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools; reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave, adding a splash of cola or water if needed to loosen.
This recipe is ideal for meal prep. Assemble everything in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook as directed. You can also cook the ribs fully, then cool and refrigerate for up to 3 days before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve these ribs as the main event with classic sides like coleslaw, cornbread, or baked beans. The sweet and smoky glaze also pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes or mac and cheese.
For a lighter meal, serve over a bed of greens or with steamed rice. The sauce is so good you'll want to spoon it over everything.
For a casual gathering, set up a rib bar with warm tortillas, pickled onions, and extra sauce so guests can build their own tacos.
The ribs also work well as a hearty topping for loaded nachos. Leftover shredded meat makes incredible sandwiches — pile it high on brioche buns with a scoop of coleslaw.

Cherry Cola BBQ Country Ribs: Easy Slow Cooker Dinner

Ingredients
- 3 lb boneless country-style pork ribs
- 1 1/2 cups pitted dark sweet cherries
- 1 cup cola
- 1 1/2 cups honey hickory barbecue sauce
Instructions
- Place the boneless country-style pork ribs in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer. Scatter the pitted dark sweet cherries evenly over the ribs. Pour the cola gently down the side of the slow cooker, avoiding washing the cherries off the meat.
- Drizzle the honey hickory barbecue sauce generously over the entire surface of the ribs and cherries. Use a spoon or spatula to spread it evenly, making sure every piece of meat is coated.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the ribs are fork-tender and easily pull apart. The internal temperature of the thickest piece should reach at least 145°F (63°C) for food safety, but for maximum tenderness, cook until the meat shreds easily. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Once the ribs are tender, turn off the slow cooker and let the ribs rest in the sauce for 10 to 15 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute and the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Using a carving fork or tongs, carefully lift the ribs out of the slow cooker and transfer them to a serving plate. Spoon some of the reduced cherry-cola BBQ sauce over the top.
