Before you start

Before beginning, ensure all ingredients are ready and within reach. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the target temperature before the assembly is complete. Have your 9x13 inch baking dish cleaned and ready on the counter.

Preparing the workspace beforehand ensures that the assembly process is efficient and that the ingredients are ready to be layered immediately after the beef has finished cooking and cooling slightly.

Ingredients at a glance (2)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 cups shredded Mexican blend cheese

Instructions

Browning the beef

  1. Prepare the beef filling
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it is browned and no longer pink. Cook until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
Look for The beef is fully browned.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip Ensure the heat is high enough to brown the meat properly for better flavor.

The ground beef should be deeply browned. There should be no pink visible, and the mixture should be fragrant. Ensure the meat has been drained of excess grease before moving to the assembly phase to maintain the right texture for the final dish.

Layering the casserole

  1. Assemble the lasagna
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13 inch glass baking dish, create layers by alternating the cooked ground beef and the shredded cheese. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a final layer of cheese on top.
Look for The dish is neatly layered and topped with cheese.
Tip Distribute the cheese evenly to ensure a consistent melt across the entire surface.

The layers should be uniform, with the beef and cheese distributed evenly. Check that the cheese is distributed consistently across the top layer to ensure a uniform melt and a beautiful appearance once the dish comes out of the oven.

Baking to perfection

  1. Bake and serve
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown. Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This resting period allows the layers to set, making it easier to lift out a clean slice with a perfect cheese pull.
Look for The cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly browned on top.
Tip Do not skip the resting time, as it prevents the lasagna from falling apart when served.

The lasagna is ready when the top is golden and bubbling. Listen for the sound of the cheese simmering around the edges of the dish.

A quick check with a knife will reveal if the internal layers are heated through. Once removed, ensure the dish rests for the full ten minutes to allow the layers to settle.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is failing to drain the fat from the ground beef after browning, which can result in a greasy casserole. Another error is rushing the assembly while the meat is piping hot, which might cause the cheese to melt too quickly before the dish even enters the oven.

Finally, omitting the resting period after baking is a frequent oversight that leads to the lasagna collapsing when you attempt to slice and serve it.

How to tell it’s done

The lasagna is done when the cheese on top is fully melted, bubbling vigorously, and shows patches of golden-brown color. The internal temperature should be hot throughout.

Since the ground meat was already cooked to 160°F (71°C) during the initial browning phase, the oven time is primarily focused on heating the entire assembly and melting the cheese to the desired consistency.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
