Before you start

Before starting, ensure all vegetables are thoroughly washed, peeled, and sliced uniformly. Having the ham pre-diced and the cheese shredded before you begin the assembly will make the process much smoother.

Preheat your oven early to ensure it reaches the target temperature, which is critical for consistent results in a casserole dish. Clear your workspace to allow enough room to layer the ingredients neatly in your baking dish.

Ingredients at a glance (3)
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 lb ham, diced
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions

Layering the ingredients

  1. Prepare the casserole base
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes into even rounds to ensure they cook through uniformly. In a glass baking dish, create layers by alternating the sliced potatoes and the diced ham until the dish is filled.
Look for ensure the potatoes are sliced thin enough to cook evenly
Tip keep the potato slices about 1/8 inch thick for the best texture

The potato slices should be arranged in overlapping layers with the ham distributed evenly between them. The baking dish should be filled to a level that allows for even heat penetration.

Ensure the oven is fully preheated to 375°F before placing the dish inside to ensure the cooking process begins immediately.

Baking the base

  1. Bake the casserole
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven. Bake the potato and ham mixture for approximately 35 to 40 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender and the ham is heated through. Cover with foil if the top begins to brown too quickly.
Look for the potatoes should be soft when pierced with a fork
Tip check for tenderness at the 30-minute mark

During the baking phase, the potatoes will release some moisture, which helps steam the ham and meld the flavors. The house will start to smell savory and earthy as the potatoes soften. Check the dish periodically to ensure the top is not browning too quickly; cover with foil if necessary.

Adding the cheese

  1. Add cheese and finish
Remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Return the dish to the oven for an additional 5 to 7 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and bubbling with a golden finish.
Look for watch for a bubbly, golden brown cheese surface
Tip broil for the last minute if a crustier cheese top is preferred

Once the potatoes are tender, the final layer of cheese is added. The cheese should melt quickly, transforming the top of the casserole into a cohesive, bubbly layer. The final result should look golden and smell rich, with the cheese stretching slightly when the casserole is first scooped.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is slicing the potatoes too thick, which prevents them from cooking through at the same rate as the rest of the dish. Avoid overcrowding the baking dish, as this can lead to uneven cooking and soggy spots.

Another error is adding the cheese too early; the cheese only needs a few minutes to melt, so adding it at the end prevents it from burning or becoming oily before the potatoes are ready.

How to tell it’s done

The casserole is done when the potatoes are completely tender and offer no resistance when pierced with a fork. The cheese should be fully melted, bubbling across the entire surface, and show signs of light browning in spots.

Since the ham is already cooked, the primary focus is on achieving the correct texture for the potatoes and a perfectly melted cheese layer.
