Before you start

Before beginning, ensure all ingredients are measured and ready on the counter. Soften the cream cheese by leaving it out of the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, which makes mixing much easier. If the slider buns come as a single loaf, use a large, serrated knife to cut through the middle horizontally, creating a top and bottom slab.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) so it is ready once the assembly is complete. Finally, ensure the cooked chicken is shredded into small, manageable pieces to allow for an even distribution of flavor.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 12 count slider buns, split
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups shredded cheese

Instructions

Filling preparation

  1. Prepare the filling
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the shredded cooked chicken, crumbled bacon, softened cream cheese, and half of the shredded cheese until thoroughly combined.
Look for The mixture should be creamy and uniform in texture without large lumps of cream cheese remaining.
Tip Ensure the cream cheese is at room temperature before mixing to make the process much easier.

The filling should be a smooth, thick, and consistent mixture where the chicken, bacon, and cheese are perfectly distributed. It should look creamy and hold its shape when scooped.

Check that there are no large, unmixed clumps of cream cheese, as these would create uneven pockets of flavor. The texture should be thick enough to stay on the bun without sliding off during assembly.

Assembly of sliders

  1. Assemble the sliders
Place the bottom halves of the slider buns on a baking tray. Spread the chicken and bacon mixture evenly over the buns, then top with the remaining shredded cheese and the bun tops.
Look for Spread the filling to the edges of the buns for consistent flavor in every bite.
Tip Use a serrated knife to split the entire slab of buns at once if they come connected.

The sliders should be arranged neatly on the baking tray with the filling spread edge-to-edge. The top layer of cheese should be evenly distributed to ensure every slider gets a portion. Check that the bun tops are securely placed and aligned with the bottoms. The assembly should look uniform, with the filling well-contained between the bun layers, ready for the final bake.

Final bake

  1. Bake and serve
Bake the assembled sliders at 350°F (175°C) until the cheese is melted and the internal temperature of the chicken mixture reaches 165°F (74°C). Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Look for The tops should be golden brown and the cheese should be bubbling between the buns.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Keep a close eye on the oven to ensure the buns do not burn while the cheese melts.

The sliders are ready when the buns are golden and the cheese is melted and bubbling at the edges. The aroma should be savory and inviting, with the smell of toasted bread and warm cheese. Check that the internal temperature has reached the required safety level. The sliders should look cohesive and hold together when lifted with a spatula after the short resting period.

Common mistakes

Avoid overstuffing the sliders, as this can cause the filling to leak out onto the baking tray during the melting process. Another common mistake is using cold cream cheese, which results in a lumpy filling that does not spread evenly.

Ensure the oven is fully preheated before inserting the tray; otherwise, the buns may dry out before the internal cheese has a chance to melt properly. Finally, ensure the filling is spread evenly to the edges to avoid dry spots in the finished sliders.

How to tell it’s done

The sliders are done when the tops are golden brown and the cheese is thoroughly melted and bubbling. Because the chicken is pre-cooked, the goal is to heat the entire assembly until the internal temperature of the filling reaches 165°F (74°C).

The cheese should look soft and stretchy when pulled apart. If using a thermometer, insert it into the center of the middle slider to verify the temperature. Allow the sliders to rest for 5 minutes after removing from the oven to let the filling settle before pulling them apart.
