Tips for success
For the thickest smoothie, use frozen cherries instead of fresh and reduce the ice cubes to 1/2 cup. This keeps the drink cold without diluting it.
If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup to the blender—just keep in mind that the video uses no sweetener. The natural tartness of the cherries and pomegranate is balanced by the creamy yogurt and bittersweet chocolate.
When grating the chocolate, hold the bar at a slight angle and use long, even strokes to create large, pretty curls. If the chocolate starts to melt from the heat of your hands, chill it in the freezer for 5 minutes first.
For a more dramatic garnish, reserve a few pomegranate arils and cherry slices to place on top of the whipped cream.
Variations
- Berry Twist: Replace the pomegranate arils with fresh raspberries or blackberries. Use a mixed berry juice instead of pomegranate juice for a different fruity profile. The smoothie will still be thick and fudgy, with a slightly different berry flavor.
- Minty Fresh: Add a few fresh mint leaves to the blender along with the other ingredients. The mint adds a cool, refreshing note that pairs beautifully with the dark chocolate and cherries. Garnish with a mint sprig for an elegant touch.
- Coffee Kick: Add 1/4 cup cold brewed coffee or espresso to the blender. The coffee enhances the chocolate flavor and adds a subtle caffeine boost. Reduce the pomegranate juice by 2 tablespoons to keep the consistency thick.
- Vegan Version: Use a plant-based yogurt, such as coconut or almond yogurt, and ensure the dark chocolate is dairy-free. The texture will be slightly different but still creamy. Omit the whipped cream or use a coconut-based whipped topping.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store any leftover smoothie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Stir well before serving.
- Freezer
- Freeze the smoothie in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then blend with a little juice to restore texture.
- Reheat
- Not applicable—serve cold. If frozen, thaw and blend again before serving.
This smoothie is best enjoyed fresh, but it can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Before serving, give it a good stir or shake, as the ingredients may separate. The texture will thicken slightly after chilling, so you may want to add a splash of pomegranate juice to loosen it.
You can prep the ingredients in advance: slice the cherries, seed the pomegranate, and grate the chocolate. Store the fruit in separate containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The chocolate curls can be kept in a sealed container at room temperature for up to a week. When ready to make the smoothie, simply measure and blend.
Serving ideas
Serve the smoothie immediately after blending, while it is still thick and cold. Use tall glasses or a crystal glass for a special presentation.
The whipped cream and chocolate curls should be added just before serving so they stay fresh and visually appealing. A straw or long spoon can be offered, but the smoothie is thick enough to eat with a spoon.
This smoothie makes a satisfying dessert or a luxurious breakfast. It pairs well with a light brunch menu, such as croissants or a fruit salad.
For a more indulgent occasion, drizzle a little chocolate syrup inside the glass before pouring the smoothie. The combination of flavors is rich and complex, so it stands on its own without additional garnishes.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups pitted dark cherries
- 1/2 cup pomegranate arils
- 1/2 cup pomegranate juice
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp cocoa nibs
- 2 oz 70% dark Belgian chocolate
- whipped cream, for serving
Instructions
- Slice the pitted dark cherries in half or into quarters. Tap the pomegranate halves with a wooden spoon to release the arils, removing any white pith. Grate the dark chocolate on a box grater into a pile of curls.
- Measure the pomegranate juice and Greek yogurt. Keep the ice cubes ready near the blender.
- Add the sliced cherries, pomegranate arils, pomegranate juice, ice cubes, Greek yogurt, and cocoa nibs to a glass blender pitcher.
- Lock the lid on the blender pitcher. Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds, stopping to scrape down the sides once or twice, until the mixture forms a thick, swirling vortex and is completely smooth.
- Pour the thick smoothie from the blender pitcher into a crystal glass or tall serving glasses. Finish with a generous swirl of whipped cream and a shower of the dark chocolate curls.
