Before you start

Before beginning, ensure the oven is preheated to the correct temperature to allow for even baking. Arrange the baking dish on a stable surface and gather all ingredients, including the butter, which should be melted to a liquid consistency.

If the deli ham is cold, allow it to sit for a few minutes at room temperature, but do not exceed 30 minutes, to ensure the center of the sliders heats through properly during the relatively short baking time.

Ingredients at a glance (6)
  • 12 count slider buns, split
  • 1 lb deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz swiss cheese, sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp honey mustard
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds

Instructions

Assembly Phase

  1. Assemble the sliders
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the slider buns in half horizontally, keeping the rolls connected if possible. Place the bottom halves into a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer the deli ham and Swiss cheese evenly over the bottom buns. Place the top halves of the buns over the cheese layer to close the sandwiches.
Look for The ham and cheese should be distributed evenly across the base of the baking dish for consistent cooking.
Tip Using a serrated knife makes cutting the entire slab of rolls much easier and cleaner.

The sliders are arranged in the baking dish with the ham and cheese layered neatly between the bun halves. Check that the buns are tightly packed together to ensure they heat uniformly and stay moist throughout the baking process.

Glazing Phase

  1. Prepare and apply the glaze
In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, honey mustard, and poppy seeds until well combined. Using a basting brush, generously coat the tops of the assembled slider buns with the butter mixture, ensuring the glaze drips down the sides of the rolls.
Look for The glaze should look glossy and the poppy seeds should be evenly distributed across the bun tops.
Tip Make sure the butter is warm so the honey mustard incorporates smoothly without clumping.

The butter, honey mustard, and poppy seed mixture is applied thoroughly to the top of the buns. Ensure that the glaze is distributed across the entire surface of the rolls so that no part of the bread remains dry before entering the oven.

Baking Phase

  1. Bake until golden
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and the cheese is completely melted and bubbly. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Look for The cheese should be fully melted and bubbling, and the tops of the buns should be toasted to a golden brown color.
Tip Letting the sliders rest briefly helps the cheese set slightly, making them easier to pull apart without losing the filling.

The sliders are removed from the oven after the final uncovered baking step. The cheese is bubbly and the tops are golden brown. Confirm that the sliders have rested for at least 5 minutes before serving to allow the heat to distribute evenly.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is failing to brush the glaze evenly across all the buns, which can lead to uneven coloring and flavor. Ensure every inch of the bun tops is coated, including the edges.

Another error is baking at too high a temperature, which risks burning the poppy seeds or the bun tops before the cheese has fully melted. Always follow the temperature guidelines and use the foil covering to protect the buns during the initial phase of the cooking process.

How to tell it’s done

The sliders are done when the tops are a deep golden brown and the cheese is visibly melted and bubbling around the edges of the buns.

Since the primary goal is to melt the cheese and toast the bread rather than cook raw ingredients, the visual cues are the most reliable indicators of readiness.

The sliders should feel warm and firm to the touch, and the internal temperature of the cheese layer should be hot enough to ensure a satisfying pull.
